russian orthodox icon

BRIDGEPORT — What is described as a “weeping icon” from an Orthodox church near Scranton, Pa., will be making a visit to Bridgeport on Friday.
The Rev. David Cochran of the St. John the Baptist Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church, 364 Mill Hill Ave., said that the icon, an image of Mary and the baby Jesus, will be unveiled in a ceremony beginning at 6 p.m.
Believers say that the Mary image sheds tears of myrrh-scented oil.
The moleben service — or one of devotion to Mary or a saint — will be celebrated by the Rev. Mark Leasure of the St. George Orthodox Church, Taylor, Pa., the keeper of the icon. Visitors will be asked not to take pictures of the icon, nor mention the experience on social media.
Leasure will anoint believers with oil from the icon, which many say has curative powers. The glass-enclosed icon is a print of another weeping icon. It measures about 18 by 22 inches. Little is known about its past, however.
Leasure will discuss the icon, and there will be light refreshments served afterward.
